There are basically two categories of chronic pain. One is intermittent pain which happens in waves. The other is persistent pain that can last for 12 or more hours and at times up to a few months.

At our Newmarket chiropractic clinic it’s important that we explain how the body works to heal itself. To help you understand the primary cause of chronic pain, we first have to understand how the nervous system works. Virtually all body parts from the ends of your fingers, from the tips of your toes and nearly everywhere in between are connected by the nervous system. These nerves are part of the peripheral nervous system or (PNS). These peripheral nerves all connect in the spine and run up to the brain. The brain and the spinal cord are collectively known as the central nervous system or (CNS). These nerves are a network of connecting wires made up of cells called “neurons”. These nerves are responsible for sending messages to and from your brain to the different body parts such as cells, tissue and organs.

Nerves Carry Information

Nervous_system_diagramThis transmission of information in the nerves is sent basically by electrical/chemical signals. In a healthy person signals from the cells are transmitted to the brain and signals from the brain are transmitted to the cells. If no abnormalities occur in the signals, the brain and the cells exhibit normal behaviour and natural cell growth and function result.  For example, if you want to move your leg, a part of the brain called the motor cortex gets involved. The motor cortex sends an electrical signal along the nerves through the brain stem at the base of the brain, down the spinal cord inside the spine and then into the leg to the muscles which then contract or relax to allow the leg to move.  Another example could be the aftermath of an injury or cut. The cells of the organ concerned would send a signal to the brain as to its condition. Pain receptors known as nociceptors are activated whenever there has been an injury such as breaking the skin or can even be caused by a large indentation such as stepping on a rock. Even without breaking the skin, the compression of the tissues in your foot is enough to cause the nociceptors to respond. When this occurs, an impulse is sent through the nerve to the spinal cord, and finally all the way to the brain. All of this happens in a fraction of a second. These signals are chemical in nature and the brain determines the type of signal that the cell requires to begin the reconstructing process.

When Nerves Malfunction

If a nerve is impinged or “pinched”, its ability to send the correct signal to the brain is obstructed. While the brain continues to send the appropriate remedial signal, it may well be acting on wrong or incomplete information and consequently natural cell healing does not take place. Nerves can get “pinched” by a misaligned musculoskeletal system. For example, a fall at an early age may cause an individual to unknowingly favour a hip joint or a toe or leg joint. Over time this can cause a misalignment of the body which in turn can lead to a nerve impingement. This nerve impingement is what frequently causes a problem. There are three main types of discomfort that are experienced with nerve impingement. These three include pain, numbness and the feeling of pins and needles or tingling.
